Zinal - an ancient alpine pasture hamlet - is an exceptional place, and the paths will take you to some of the most beautiful peaks in the Alps, known locally as the Imperial Crown : Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Besso, Bishorn (the Ladies’ 4.000m peak), Obergabelhorn, Matterhorn, Dent Blanche. Zinal (1670 m) has been welcoming guests for over 150 years. At the heart of alpinism during the 19th century, Zinal is the starting point to the most beautiful huts of the area. Every summer the Anniviers’ guides suggest and accompany several climbs for groups or private parties to places such as the Bishorn, the Trifthorn or the Pigne de la Lée.
In summer Zinal offers a wide variety of sporting activities, such as mountain biking, paragliding, football, tennis, mini-golf and an excursion to La Lée Copper Mine (the only mine open to visitors in Wallis)…
Several hiking paths of varying degrees of difficulty will take you to the heart of the countryside to discover exceptional fauna and flora. Every week guided walks are organised.
In winter, 70km of ski runs offer something for everyone: the skiing resort is located between 1670m and 3000m. One single ski pass for the whole Anniviers valley allows you to ski over a 200km area. Because of its exceptional location, good snow conditions are guaranteed up to the end of the season. The high altitude restaurant at Sorebois with its lovely sunny terrace provides a wonderful view of the Imperial Crown.
For lovers of extreme skiing there is a 100 h. free-ride area called Gardes de Bordon. The entrance gate at the starting point of this zone provides excellent safety conditions: if skiers are not in possession of the necessary equipment, they will not be allowed to enter. In 2003 Zinal created an Avalanche Training Centre which enables you to experience a life-like avalanche with victims and to learn how to use a transceiver. The centre is located at 2500m and has an area of 5000 sq. m, with 16 transmitters.
For cross-country skiers there is a 19km loop circuit (1½ km is flood-lit at night) on the magic Plats de La Lée.
Throughout the year, visitors can use the covered and heated swimming-pool and a multifunction hall where different sports can be practised or events organised.
For a long time now, Zinal has been known as a family resort and an especially welcoming village: it has the family-friendly resort quality label from the Swiss Tourism Federation, and offers a varied programme for children.
You are also invited to visit the neighbouring villages of Pralong, Mottec, Ayer, Mission, Cuimey, La Combaz, Les Morasses. All these villages have kept their typical characteristics, with a charm that many people thought was gone. In Ayer by previous arrangement you can visit the Madeleine Museum (dating back to the 18th century), an old butchers’ shop (now the Mountain Food House), and other relics from the past.
